Today I’m writing a special letter for Ashley (and I hope you’ll join me)!
Ashley’s friend writes, “One of my best friends is moving away in April because her future husband is in the military and he is getting stationed somewhere far away from home. So, for Christmas I have decided to put a letter box together for when she leaves and for the special days leading to the big move. I want her to have letters to open on bad days, good days, when she’s missing home and any other day in between. I would love for her to have some letters to open up that would make her smile and make her a little less homesick. She has never moved away from her friends and family and I know it’ll be tough.”
Put your pen to paper + join us in writing letters for Ashley to carry with her on her new journey!
I settled in with some hot chocolate (loaded with marshmallows, obviously) and Christmas cookie scented candles to write my letter to Ashley. I imagined what she must be going through leaving her friends and family behind, how alone and scared she must feel.
I thought back to when I first left home and moved away to college. I thought about the second time I left home to teach English in France for 7 months, how much dread was filling my heart. And I thought about the tears that fell down my cheeks as I packed my bags and headed off to New York for graduate school a year later.
That’s the thing about leaving home. It’s usually to chase after some bigger dream, to pursue our goals, or to support those we love. But that doesn’t mean it’s not hard. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t break our heart and leave us feeling afraid and lonely and like we’re losing sense of who we really are.
What gets us through those moments is the love we feel, from our friends and family, from our community, and from strangers who took a few moments out of their day to share words of encouragement.
That’s all it takes.
So, without over-thinking it, I put my pen to paper and let the words flow out.
