2013 Goals and Feelings

by Ashley on January 2, 2013 · 9 comments

New Year’s Eve is my second favorite holiday, following only after Christmas. I become wrapped up in the excitement and the possibility of everything the upcoming 365 days hold. I love the feeling of a blank slate, the chance to review the past year and see our challenges and our triumphs. I love the opportunity to dream big and plan what possibilities I want to create over the new year.

This year I took a different approach to my goal setting, inspired by Danielle LaPorte. She describes the process as flipping your goal setting upside down. And it is, in a way. It’s thinking about your goals and what you want to accomplish over the next year, but then asking yourself to reflect on your feelings.

It’s simple, really. I asked myself, “How do I want to feel?”

How do I want to feel when I’m spending time with Peter, when I’m driving across the country, when I’m training for my next half-marathon, and when it’s New Year’s Eve 2013? How do I want to feel?

I divided my goals up into four categories and then identified a feeling to correspond to each one.

How do I want to feel this year? Kind. Strong. Sincere. Inspired.

Awesome goals, Ashley! Yes, I set some goals, too: pay off debt, focus on career, travel, etc.

Good luck to you in 2013!

These are great goals, Ashley. Road trip to Canada! I’ve always wanted to visit British Columbia. My goal is to read more books, too, but I probably won’t et to watch as many movies as I’d like, because I’d really like to shift myself into freelancer mode. I just have no idea how to get started. Good luck with your goals and have fun!

I absolutely LOVE the way you’ve broken down these goals. It’s so succinct… and I love the goals, too. So nice job! (Also, is it bad that this makes me want to go back through my list and break it out into categories like yours?)
