7 Lessons I Learned From Taylor Swift

7 lessons- taylor swift

It’s no secret that I absolutely adore Taylor Swift. I honestly believe that if our paths crossed and we were able to grab frozen yogurt and chat about her latest crush, twinkle lights, and what it’s like to be 22, we’d probably be BFFs.

There are a million reasons I love her, but aside from her flawless hair and catchy songs, the most important thing Taylor has taught me what it looks like to live  a life that is honest, kind, and full of integrity, especially when faced with harsh criticism, devastating heartbreak, and insurmountable obstacles.

7 Lessons I Learned From Taylor Swift

1. Remember Why

Taylor is clear about why she is making music and hasn’t forgotten the reason behind what she does. She knows that it’s about sharing her stories and connecting with others. She buys pizza for her fans waiting in hotel lobbies, hosts meet and greets to create personal connections, and makes an effort to remember her fans names. She says, “Music has taken me all over the world, but the fans are the reason it’s been so magical.”

2. Express Gratitude

Each time she wins an award, gives a speech, or closes a concert, Taylor’s humility, awe, and appreciation are palpable. She genuinely expresses her thanks and it comes across through her actions, her words, and her expressions. She is grateful for what she has and does not take the moment for granted. We can all practice expressing sincere gratitude for what we have rather than complaining about what we lack.

3. Don’t Be Afraid To Have Fun

Whether it’s posting personal videos of her baking cookies and dancing around the kitchen of her condo or sharing instagram pictures of her latest craft project (making homemade snow globes!), Taylor isn’t afraid to have fun and show her goofy side. She wears heart-shaped sunglasses and cat ear headbands, sings loudly along with the radio, and dances around her bedroom to her favorite songs. BFFs, I tell you!

4. Be Vulnerable

In both her song lyrics and interviews Taylor puts herself out there in an authentic and fearless way, with a genuineness that is totally relateable. She writes songs about how much she loves her mom, how she’s never been the “cool” girl, and how “all you’re ever gonna be is mean”. And when Ellen scared her in the bathroom, she shrieked and fell to the floor laughing hysterically. She doesn’t pretend to be someone she’s not, and she maintains an honest vulnerability that makes you love her even more.

5. It’s Okay To Have Feelings

Since most of Taylor’s songs are about love and heartbreak, they are also about feelings. Taylor sings about how people will let you down and not everyone is going to treat you right. How people will always find a reason to be mean and try to shut you down. But Taylor has also shown us how to creatively channel that sadness, anger, and resentment into art that millions of people will love you for sharing so openly.

6. Not Everyone Will Like You

And that’s cool. No matter what you do, you can’t make everyone happy. Doing what you love, in a way that you love, won’t stop the haters, but it will exponentially improve your happiness. So, go on and rock those cat sweaters, sing songs about guys who cheat on you, and wear super sparkly dresses. Those of us who have your back will love you even more because of it.

7. Don’t Give Up

Before she broke into music scene, Taylor performed in countless musical theater productions, wrote her own poetry, and taught herself how to the play the guitar. When she was 14, she convinced her parents to move from Pennsylvania to Nashville so that she could pursue her dream of being a country music star. Three years later, her debut album was released. Taylor’s story is reminder that achieving your big goals does not happen overnight. Creating the life you love takes dedication, persistence, and an insatiable dream.

I love this post! I, too, am a huge fan of Taylor Swift and think she’s impossibly cute – and a pretty darn good role model, if you ask me. Great post! Totally agree with all these points. :)

8. Don’t be a drunky-bunky partier. She has broken up with guys for being that type, cause she just isn’t. She has her ish together, and is confident in who she is and doesn’t give into peer pressure or lowered inhibitions.

(And, having attended a wedding with her, I saw in action that how she portrays herself is her truth and reality. Boom.)

I’m not the hugest fan of Taylor Swift in terms of how she deals with her relationships, but I do love her music and these are some true lessons. She has a pretty good head on her shoulders. Thank you for writing this.

Hey Ashley! I just found you through Blacksburg Belle. I’m really diggin’ your energy and sparkly-ness! :)

I love Taylor Swift too. I listen to her song “Fearless” whenever I’m getting ready for something new (a new client call, before a trip, when I need to impress the pants off someone). Taylor’s songs have this passion and vulnerability that feels so REAL. She definitely pumps me up when I need some girl power.

Thanks so much, Sage! Fearless is one of my favorite songs ever! I love the message behind it and it’s a great pump-yourself-up song!

I don’t think I’ve ever formed an opinion on Taylor Swift one way or the other, but I absolutely loved this post. I can totally see the two of you hitting it off, and now I’m dying to see it happen. Also, I might just go listen to a few of her songs to see what all the fuss is about. I could use some “own your feelings, have fun, be fierce, do big things” inspiration right now, so thanks for that! :)

I admit I am a fan – I have been listening to “in a cafe, i watched love begin again” after a long… well yes, you can guess, what happened last Friday in my life. my ex-girlfriend is from Nashville and her daughter grew up with Taylor, she’s a family friend. I think Really Ashley – She would be in AWE to meet YOU. Give Yourself More Credit ;) And as you may know, her first professional album ends with the song Breathe – we all are rushing headlong towards our dreams – don’t focus too much on her, but where you want to go – what are 7 Lessons We Could Learn From you :)
