Inspirational Interview: Andra

by Ashley on April 15, 2013 · 3 comments

This is one of our Inspirational Interviews in which we talk to people who have imagined big dreams, made them a reality, and are living a life they love. Today we are talking to Andra from Andra Delores Design about her life as a custom wedding invitation designer.

1. Tell us a little about yourself!

Hello! I’m Andra. I’m a custom wedding stationery designer, who is head-over-heels for creating paper pieces that match the love shared between my clients. When I’m not designing, you can find me being weird (whatever that means), laughing, reading, sipping a fresh cup of (recently decaf) coffee (or glass of wine!), dancing, being nerdy, talking about weddings and/or Disney (yes, I know…), and hoarding pretty things.

2. What does living a ‘super awesome life’ look like for you?

Freedom! A ‘super awesome life’ means doing what I absolutely love, and having a job that allows me the freedom to do that. It means having meaningful relationships with people, and doing spontaneous things just to add some excitement to my daily routine. A ‘super awesome life’ is filled with a daily dose of laughter, hugs…and ice cream (whoops? Did I just say that?).

3. What was your journey like to becoming a self-employed wedding invitation designer?

Believe it or not, since I was 5 years old (maybe even younger!), I had wanted to be a doctor. Ironically, I never was “led” to the medical shadowing opportunities growing up, but nevertheless, I was stubborn and consistent that I was going to be a doctor (stubbornness: a curse and a blessing). However, I had always been the “creative one” in my family, who was naturally drawn to opportunities and experiences where I could create, craft, paint, draw…oh, and spend time with people.

Well, long story short, I ended up going to college, where one of my friends asked me about my passions. I responded “people and creating,” which got me thinking….One thing lead to another, and I was wrapped up in the world of art and design, and I couldn’t be happier! I also interned for two small business owners (shout out to Molly Marie Photography and Eventful Occasions! Ow ow!), where I learned some business 101 basics, as well as the nitty-gritties of running a business.  I knew that weddings and design were my passions, and after learning so much and being inspired by my internships, I was SO ready to take the leap, and I’m so thankful I did.

4. What is the biggest lesson you have learned working for yourself?

Oh man, there are SO many lessons! I think the biggest lesson for me (at least right now) has been setting my priorities, and having the courage to stick to them.  I was raised on “God, family, school…and then everything else.” Starting my own business has forced me to reflect on what’s important to me, and where I want to put my energy and precious time.  It’s also helped me keep perspective of the ‘big picture.’

5. What advice do you have for other aspiring solopreneurs?

Do it! But also understand that it’s not as glamorous as it may appear. Don’t be naive…be prepared, and do your research! Doing a ‘dream job’ requires a level of sacrifice (especially at the beginning!) that can sometimes be overwhelming…but I know  that I am daily loving what I am doing, and that’s enough for me. If you’re passionate about something, you can totally make it work. Just set goals (seriously, write them down…), and celebrate your achievements!

Also, despite how awesome being prepared is, understand that you’re going to have to embrace ‘living and learning.’ If you wait until you are 100% ready, I promise you it won’t happen! Solopreneurs are constantly learning, adjusting, and changing. It’s time to just do it!

6. What little things in life right now make you do a happy dance? Big things?

I kind of think everything is a big thing….hope that’s okay ;)

Things (in no particular order): launching a business (still happy dancing over that), the fact that I jumped in a rain puddle this morning, the color of my office walls, skype (ah, thank you technology world!), a postcard from Korea, my new website being coded, spending time with my family this weekend, receiving client testimonials, packaging a client’s order, getting beat by my 4 year old cousin in a memory game, Disney World…the list goes on and on!

7. In the movie of your life, who would you want to play you?

Confession: I have NO idea! So…I asked my sister and best friend, and here are their responses: “Jennifer Lawrence. She is super cool. Bad ass. And eats cheeseburgers. She also doesn’t take herself too seriously.” and “Amy Adams. For sure. Like in Enchanted!”  I trust their judgement. ;)

8. What is the one thing you’d like to change about the world?

My heart is filled with love for the oppressed, especially for the women and children caught in the ugliness of human and sex trafficking.  I would do anything to change this immediately, but I do my best to stay educated and aware of it.  Even as one person, a huge impact can still be made in these women and children’s lives, and I want to be a part of that.

9. What quote best represents you or motivates you in your current place in life?

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” -Walt Disney

10. What inspires you to continue living a life you love each day?

Inspiration? Oh lady…I’m an inspiration hoarder. Meaning: when I say a lot of things inspire me, that’s an understatement. First off, knowing God desire’s for my heart to be happy, inspires me to live a life I love.  Just knowing that inspires me.  My friends, family, and just people in general, are not only encouraging, but actually inspire me as well.  Their words, their giggles, and their passions drive me on a daily basis.  Also, as cliché as it may sound, I am inspired by life itself. I am blessed to have life so abundantly. Why would I want to waste a precious day not doing what I love? On top of life itself, pretty things inspire me. Lace, the color mint, florals…if it’s pretty (and romantic), I’m inspired. I wouldn’t consider myself an actual hoarder by any stretch of the imagination, but I do have one serious case of collecting pretty things. Who needs 18+ floral patterned plates? This girl!

Thanks so much for sharing, Andra!
