1. Tell us a little about yourself!

My name is Andrea, I am a native Houstonian, and I have had a passion for makeup since I can remember. I love how a little lipstick and mascara can completely change your mood and make a woman feel great about herself. With a little over 10 years experience in the Cosmetic industry, I have no plans of ever leaving and began my business, FaceForward Weddings in 2007. We specialize in Bridal makeup application and sunless tanning.

2. What does living a “super awesome life” look like for you?

Being able to spend more time with my friends and family, and having the freedom of not being tied to a M-F 9-5 job. Although most of my work is on the weekends, those are the days I get excited to wake up early and work late because I love what I do.

3. How did you get started as a makeup artist?

My mom and I went “back to school shopping” when I was 13 in Foley’s and a makeup artist with Benefit Cosmetics sat me down and showed me a few things. By the time she was finished, my mom and I each had an entirely new set of makeup and I had a new love. I would go to the counter as often as I could asking questions like “What does this do?” “What is in this that makes it work?” “When are y’all going to hire me?”.

By the time I turned 16 I was hired without an interview or audition, probably due to the fact that I basically begged them to let me become a BeneBabe. I worked for Benefit for about 6 years, Chanel for big events, and Fusion Beauty working weddings whenever I was available.

4. What has been your biggest challenge since going off on your own and starting your own business?

Leaving my steady-income job was the hardest part. Everything else has pretty much fallen into place and the people around me are my biggest cheerleaders. If it’s meant to be and you really do have a passion, you will succeed.

5. What advice would you give to other passion-powered women who want to break into the makeup biz?

Watch video tutorials on YouTube and try them out on your friends. Work at a makeup counter so you can be trained for free by some of the best companies out there and have an appreciation for people who work retail.

6. What little things in life right now make you you do a happy dance? Big things?

Little things: Getting ready to go out with girlfriends, the look on my boyfriend’s face when he realizes he just did something dorky and then realizes that that’s why I love him, champagne, and sending puppy pictures to my friends when they are having a bad day.

Big things: I love the look of happiness on a client’s face once I show her the finished product, booking a new client, buying a new machine that I know is going to rock, the everyday rush of being self-employed, and working with new and amazing people.

7. In the movie of your life, who would you want to play you?

Kristen Wiig because I think she has a hilarious awkwardness about her which I find in myself.

8. What is one thing you’d like to change about the world?

Whether you’re a 16 year old high school student or a 50-something business woman, the way we ladies treat each other sets the standard for how men treat us as well. Young girls calling each other ugly names is one of my biggest pet peeves and everyone will be bullied at some point in their life, but I think it’s time to grow up, ladies. Give someone you don’t know a compliment or better yet, give someone you normally wouldn’t WANT to know one. Play nice!

9. What quote best represents you or motivates you in your current place in life?

“Success is often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” – Coco Chanel

10. What inspires you to continue living a life you love each day?

Why would I want to do anything else??

Thanks so much for sharing, Andrea!
