7 Business Blunders to Avoid at All Costs

What makes one business succeed and the other fizzle out like a forgotten 8th grade crush?

Well, unfortunately there isn’t some magic formula, but there are a few key ingredients.

If you want a business that captivates people and leaves you feeling excited to wake up on Monday morning, you’ve got to take yourself (and your business) seriously.

You have to invest time and energy into your work. (That means spending more than five minutes between your day job and happy hour working on your biz.)

You have to be authentic AND clear in your messages.

And if you want to be the next Marie or Danielle (or, even better, the first YOU), you must steer clear of the following mistakes.

7 business blunders you need to avoid at all costs:

1. You’re not blogging regularly.

Having a blog is one of the easiest way to share your brilliance with the world and one of the biggest mistakes I see so many new business owners making. I know it can be overwhelming to get started, but once you get the hang of it, it’s actually really fun!

When you have a blog and share valuable knowledge regularly, it helps you become viewed as an expert in your field, which is a lovely perk. Plus, some clients like to lurk around for a while before they make any investments, so having awesome blog posts for them to read each week, helps keeps them engaged and more likely to work with you the in the future.

2. You’re not writing guest posts.

I know, I know. I was totally terrified of writing guest posts too (it’s scary to put yourself out there in front of the big shots), but I promise it’s not as scary as you think. Whatever you’d normally blog about on  your own site, can easily become a fab guest post.

Guest posting is also important because it allows you to become associated with some of the bigger names in your field. It’s like  networking, from the comfort of your own couch.

And, of course, the big benefit of writing guest posts is that it will bring new readers to your site (where they will hopefully sign up for your list and become future clients).

3. You’re not updating your website.

If your website says you’re still offering a sale “through November 2013”, then you’ve got a problem. It’s obvious you’re not taking your business seriously, so what are you clients supposed to think?

Pour yourself some peach tea and spend an afternoon going back through your archives, updating old links, and sprucing up your “Work With Me” page. And if you don’t have a website, get on that now. You can thank me later.

4. You’re not making videos.

Yes, blogging is great, but video blogging? It’s so much better. Think of someone describing a hot fudge sundae versus actually seeing a hot fudge sundae. It makes all the difference.

Videos are the fastest way for potential clients to get to know you, to like you, and to trust you. And that’s the all-important trifecta.

5. You’re not being unique in your brand.

Are your programs just copycats of all the other coaches out there? Are your fonts boring and bland? Are your head shots selfies you took last summer before a girls’ night out? Is your personality struggling to show up in an authentic way?

If you answered yes, then your brand isn’t helping you. Having a unique brand is easy when you allow your true personality to come across in everything you do. 

6. You’re not using your list.

I’ve heard some coaches and business owners say they don’t want to have a list because it feels sleazy and fake. But you know what those coaches don’t have? A thriving business.

Gathering emails is super important because it allows you direct access to your potential clients! And there’s way to talk to them without feeling like a used car salesman.

I mean, if these people are happily giving you their email address, they want to hear from you. So, what would they absolutely love to know when you pop into their inbox? Sales on your services? Insider secrets? Upcoming events?

7. You’re not talking to your dream client.

Do you know who your dream client is? Does she have a name? Do you know where she shops? Do you know what she’s dying to learn from you? If not, you probably aren’t talking to your dream client enough.

If you don’t have a crystal clear picture of who you’d love to work with, you aren’t going to see the growth you want in your business. Each time you write a blog post, create a new service, and market a new product, you should be speaking to one specific person- your dream client.

You are AWESOME! I discovered you on Sunday. Love what’s happening here! thanks for all the good advice. I know I need to make some videos and do some guest posts. It will be fun. I will not be lazy!
